Title: AssangeDAO return JBX for ETH
Author: AssangeDAO
Date: 04/07/2021

Abstract:

AssangeDAO, a non for profit DAO for a noble cause focuses on making efforts to freeing imprisoned cypherpunk, technologist and publisher Julian Assange. AssangeDAO requests a refund of the 5%(ETH871.13) fees paid to Juicebox. These funds will be used to continue the AssangeDAO mission. If this proposal is passed, AssangeDAO will give back all its JBX tokens it received for the ETH871.13 retained by Juicebox.

Motivation:

AssangeDAO’s core mission is to inspire a powerful solidarity network and fight for the freedom of Julian Assange. In doing this it seeks to safeguard the rights and liberties of people everywhere. AssangeDAO is one of the most successful DAOs of all time, having outpaced its record-setting predecessor, ConstitutionDAO. ConstitutionDAO raised ETH11,613. AssangeDAO raised ETH17,422. Whereas ConstitutionDAO is a for profit vehicle designed to enable its purchasers to possess a specific item, AssangeDAO is a charitable cause built around protecting the very freedoms upon which Juicebox and other DAOs and platforms are dependent. It is in this sense that charging the AssangeDAO a fee might have some reputational cost to Juicebox, considering objectively lesser causes did not incur such costs.

Supporters contributed ETH17,422 to the AssangeDAO via Juicebox. To accomplish the mission to free Assange, AssangeDAO decided to use all available ETH to purchase the Pak x Assange NFT Clock. Pak donated all the ETH to the Wau Holland Stiftung(Foundation) in Germany that funds Assanges' legal defense and campaign for his freedom.

The decision to use all available ETH to purchase the Pak x Assange NFT was based, in part, on the notion that there would be a pathway available to AssangeDAO for the return of the Juicebox fee so AssangeDAO could continue to operate after it had achieved its first objective. There were discussions to this nature early on in the AssangeDAOs creation.

Because the suggested Juicebox refund was never properly ratified, it has led to uncertainty as to the overall liquidity of AssangeDAO and the noble purpose it has and will continue to serve. We believe strongly that refunding the fees will serve as a firestarter, and enable our partnership to continue apace, benefitting both DAOs immensely over time.

  • Juicebox is the first business partner of AssangeDAO and was part of a massive success story being written into history books even now. Quite literally, the two DAOs have made change on a grand scale possible. We feel a sense of community toward the JuiceboxDAO and envision many rewarding collaborative projects in the future.
  • AssangeDAO, as a part of this proposition would continue to express its gratitude towards Juicebox via social media platforms in order to help Juicebox grow in popularity as well as influence. In fact, many people first heard about Juicebox because they read news about AssangeDAO’s record-breaking raise. In future media and social media posts, AssangeDAO will make every effort to mention Juicebox’s collaborations with AssangeDAO and work toward the maximization of Juicebox’s public profile.

Pending likely community approval, a more official partnership could be considered as well. We strongly feel that JuiceboxDAO and its respective platform could benefit long-term from such an association and the innumerable projects the AssangeDAO intends to undertake. It is also an opportunity for JuiceboxDAO to gain a priceless kind of notoriety as a defender of free speech in an era of rampant global censorship.

What will AssangeDAO do with the returned ETH?

AssangeDAO intends to use the Juicebox fees as operational funds that can help directly or indirectly bring about Assange’s freedom and support causes such as Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Information and Whistleblowing. We believe everyone, no matter where you live or which DAO you belong to, will benefit significantly from these projects. How the ETH is allocated will be decided by the AssangeDAO community based on the DAO’s governance structure.

AssangeDAO award is one example of a proposal being considered by the community.

Risks:

While there is a risk that other such major projects would attempt to follow a precedent set by this refund, we feel our circumstances and partnership are unique enough in nature that such future requests by other projects would not have hold over Juicebox operation or likely be able to meet a standard of refund policy set here.

Although the magnitude of the refund is large, we believe the overall potential gain here vastly outweighs any risks incurred by either party. As much as AssangeDAO would directly benefit from the infusion of funds, JuiceboxDAO would solidify a powerful alliance that would be able to genuinely assist its expansion.

A refund to AssangeDAO will be offset by the return of AssangeDAO JBX tokens to Juicebox.

Specification:

ETH871 returned to AssangeDAO gnosis safe from Juicebox Treasury and JBX87,478,938.89 sent from AssangeDAO to burn address.
