Title: Sponsor Development of jokedao v2
Author: seanmc
Date: 2022-06-16

Thesis

Pay the jokedao Juicebox project $40,000 USD to fund 10 weeks of development of V2 of the jokedao platform.

Abstract

This proposal’s goal is to provide grant funds to jokedao to enable continued development of jokedao.io - the on-chain governance platform that they are building as a public good. Funds will be distributed as milestones are met.

Motivation

DAO governance can be fun, and jokedao has created the platform to enable that. v1 currently has full functionality to mint voting tokens, create contests where anyone can propose, as well as a UI to use those things. v2 will build out the full capacity of jokedao’s extensible contracts, so that it is a truly accessible, powerful public good that DAOs to come use to make decisions and cohere.

Risks

Honestly the biggest risk is that we run out of funding - give us funding and we will deliver (for evidence of this check out what we currently have as well as what we’re working on currently here and here).

Specification

Milestone 1

Estimated duration: 2 weeks

FTE: 240 hours

  1. Develop content moderation module
  2. Enable downvoting, randomization of options with 0 votes, uploading of all times of content (video, music, etc.), ability of contest creators to determine which proposals are visible to a community to vote on

Milestone 2

Estimated Duration: 4 weeks

FTE: 480 hours

  1. Develop tournament module
  2. Let voters pick between two or more different options in a ‘tournament’ style that gradually creates brackets of winners, so that any given voter doesn’t need to sort through hundreds of proposals but instead can emergently create consensus by only evaluating individual items closely

Milestone 3

Estimated Duration: 4 weeks

FTE: 480 hours

  1. Develop grants proposal module
  2. Enable proposals to be transactions that can be executed upon completion of the Contest

Final UI Prototype

Upon completion of milestone 1:

  • Transfer $8,000 USD worth of ETH to the multisig in the next Juicebox DAO funding cycle.
  • Multisig to pay the jokedao Juicebox project $8,000 USD worth of ETH.

Upon completion of milestone 2:

  • Transfer $16,000 USD worth of ETH to the multisig in the next Juicebox DAO funding cycle.
  • Multisig to pay the jokedao Juicebox project $16,000 USD worth of ETH.

Upon completion of milestone 3:

  • Transfer $16,000 USD worth of ETH to the multisig in the next Juicebox DAO funding cycle.
  • Multisig to pay the jokedao Juicebox project $16,000 USD worth of ETH.

Rationale

The jokedao Juicebox project is already configured to pay out directly to the developers, enabling transparent payroll and runway. Also, when DAOs do emerge from people making decisions together using jokedao, we have no doubts at all with regards to where we’ll send them for treasury management - it is abundantly clear that Juicebox is the place to go for material, comprehensive support for projects that want to be sustainable.

For Juicebox, anyone can set up a contest to crowdsource user ideas and preferences, and Juicebox could even incentivize these with rewards for voters and winning ideas—saving the expense of user research, drawing attention to the protocol as user-focused, and embracing unique web3 functionality to build a stronger community of Juicebox supporters. Projects like MetricsDAO and Backdrop already are using us for these purposes, and we have a number of projects looking to use us after our site relaunch, including Women Build Web3, Developer DAO, Buidl Guidl (Austin Griffith), Mintsong, Doge NFT, and DreamDAO.

Just as importantly, however, Juicebox could use contests to handle its grants program: anyone could submit a grant proposal through jokedao (rather than airtable), and token holders could vote on their favorites to approve. This again would be a way to incentivize the community to support Juicebox while helping Juicebox collect better data. We're in talks with Seed Club, Forefront, Radar, CityDAO, Radicle, ZKSync, and Gitcoin about developing a grants module they could use for their own grants program as well.
