Abstract

  • Remove temperature check freeze for translations.
  • Snapshot quorum from 15 total voters → 80,000,000 affirmative JBX
  • Removed emergency governance processes
  • Proposals must clearly specify multisig actions to be deemed executable.
  • Improved clarity, consistency, and specificity.

Motivation

Currently:

  • Temperature checks currently feel rushed, especially due to the freeze for translations.
  • The Snapshot quorum is irrelevant—no proposal has ever failed due to it. The governance process can let through proposals that the community is not truly enthusiastic about.
  • Emergency governance processes are a major outstanding avenue for abuse, and have not been utilized.
  • Unclear proposals often lead to confusion and additional work on the multisig’s part.
  • The Juicebox DAO Governance Process has inconsistencies and unclear language.

Risks

  • Without a translation buffer, authors could change their proposals just before they go to offchain voting, bypassing the temperature check stage.
  • The DAO may miss out on executing controversial but valuable proposals.
  • An unforseen event could arise in which emergency governance would be useful.
  • Proposals may be more burdensome to write, especially for newcomers.
  • Consistency updates could lead to confusion for those used to something else (e.g. Juicebox DAO → JuiceboxDAO).

Specification

Rationale

  • Translators are currently writing proposal summaries, and do not need a full 24 hours to make a translation. There is a possibility of leveraging DeepL’s API to roughly translate proposals automatically.
  • A JBX quorum is less susceptible to manipulation. The quorum only measuring affirmative votes prevents the possibility of a proposal passing quorum because you voted no.
  • It is difficult to envision a scenario where emergency governance could address a major existential issue, especially given the protocol-level limits on reconfigurations.
  • Multisig work and bookkeeping could be simplified with improved proposal specificity.
  • Ambiguities lead to confusion and disagreement, especially for newcomers.

Timeline

The updated governance process should take effect during the first temperature check after this proposal’s passing on Snapshot.
