Revenue for the DAO and a Foundation for our “Next Big Thing”

Abstract

MoonDAO needs to grow its ambition and capability with a goal that is an order of magnitude more difficult than what we did previously, and this proposal kicks off the first step in achieving this goal. Our primary objective with the project will be to create a launchpad for citizens and teams to raise funding for an initiative. This will help use set the groundwork and derisk a larger initiative that MoonDAO is gearing up for: sending another high visibility individual to space that can communicate MoonDAO’s Mission to people from all over the world, and potentially open up another sweepstakes for another member to go as well if we raise enough funds. This project will also create a robust revenue stream to continue to fund the treasury so we can continue to support projects, prizes, and MoonDAO operations by turning this model into a profitable revenue-generating business long term to continue to send individuals to space and fund initiatives for teams.

Problem

MoonDAO needs to grow and rise to a new challenge on our journey to the Moon. There is an opportunity with the crypto markets seeing a full recovery to launch a new initiative that propels our organization forward, raising more money for space projects and prizes, and sending more people on a mission that gets us closer to our ultimate objective.

Beyond setting up the ground work and de-risking our next flagship initiative, we have been repeatedly asked by individuals for help from MoonDAO to raise funds for them to go to space. We have a growing sales pipeline of individuals who are looking to go to space, and this could be converted into a sustainable business that brings in revenue for the DAO either through direct sales with launch providers, or by providing them the tools to raise and manage an onchain treasury for campaigns to send them to space, as this is something we have expertise in.

In advising and supporting these campaigns, MoonDAO can create a significant income stream by getting a reserve of the tokens, receiving a small fee from the total raised, providing liquidity to those tokens, advising on security and tokenomics, and supporting the promotion of token launches to send people to space.

Solution

MoonDAO will work with a high-visibility individual with a big impact and send them to space and/or a high-impact team where we can fund an initiative to support their work. We will structure a contract with that individual or team for a portion of the revenue their mission generates in terms of media, sponsorships, or other IP that is generated from the raise, and establish a long-term relationship with that individual/team where they can continue to promote MoonDAO.

This will lay the groundwork to structure a campaign to aim for a seat that is an order of magnitude larger than what MoonDAO has previously done, a secondary objective for this mission is to derisk this crowdfunding campaign Therefore, we will spend this quarter addressing the following risks that we foresee with taking on such a large initiative:

  • Finding a high-impact individual: There is a risk that we cannot negotiate a contract with the right high-impact individual to support a crowd raise to send them on a mission with MoonDAO that stands for our values and can communicate and support MoonDAO long term.
    • Mitigation: Reaching out to multiple high-impact individuals and working on creating a strong relationship with them before taking the leap to have them be the individual we send up. We can also begin raising funds without this individual, and continue to build the relationship with them as we go.
  • Marketing Risk: We cannot generate the necessary reach in our marketing and communications to raise the required funds, and we don’t make enough of an impact to reach the public consciousness.
    • We will need to up our marketing and communications to fit the intended audience for crypto and build up a stronger crypto presence. We may bring in a strategic advisor in this area to help us break into the right type of audiences.
    • Negotiate deals to “pay as we go” with a deposit up front and pay the rest based on milestones. Build relationships with multiple organizations that provide similar services.
    • Aim to get pre-commits for this type of seat from a few HNWI to help kickstart the project.
    • Begin with a smaller crowd raise to test the waters for another team.
    • Have a sliding-scale roadmap of success with the amount that we raise, with different milestones meaning we can unlock certain capabilities.
  • Financial Risk: Releasing a new token could divert attention from the $MOONEY governance token.
    • Mitigation: We will include a substantial reserve of the tokens that would go to the MoonDAO Treasury.
  • Development Risk: The infrastructure we rely on to do this crowd raise may not be ready for a stress-test, and new mechanisms tend to be less adopted than mechanisms that have been “tried and true”
    • Mitigation: We can run this same system using a “regular” Juicebox Treasury.
  • Timeline Risk: External and uncontrollable risks like the timeline for the seats we are targeting to purchase gets pushed back indefinitely, or market conditions worsen especially within the Ethereum ecosystem.

Our current plan is that the campaign will use a RevNet where a significant portion of the tokens are reserved and locked, and can only be used to purchase the seat. From that point onwards, the RevNet will serve as a smart-contract where any payload sales, sponsorships, seat sales, etc. are all collected.

MoonDAO’s Treasury will retain a reserve of the tokens for each of these initiatives, and these tokens will support the creation of DePrizes, Projects, and continue to fund Executive Operations. MoonDAO will also provide token management services for the launchpad, providing liquidity and supporting the campaign to get off the ground.

We will create a dedicated marketing campaign for this individual spanning social media, online marketing, podcasts, twitter spaces, and other impactful media to reach an order of magnitude more people with the campaign than we did for our first large-scale initiative.

From this same system, MoonDAO will build a launchpad for individuals to create campaigns to fund their seats to space. This will consist of a Juicebox project (or RevNet) where people can manage their campaigns to create tokens in exchange for raising money to go to space. We will apply this framework towards a flagship campaign to raise funds for a selected high-visibility individual and roll that out within MoonDAO, and then open up the tools to more citizens, and eventually teams that want to manage their campaigns to fund any initiative. The main goal of this proposal will be to deliver on the launch of this flagship raise for someone else.

Benefits

  • Solves for a known market, the demand is there.
  • Challenges us to raise an order of magnitude more funds for a new campaign which strengthens and tests our capabilities as an organization.
  • Creates revenue and increases the total size of the MoonDAO Treasury.
  • We have expertise in this domain. Same business model we’ve run MoonDAO on.

Risks

  • With Objective #1 there is a risk that the external team we use to coordinate this fundraise does not garner the level of excitement that we’d hope. We have some great leads on this front, so we believe we can mitigate this by having a couple opportunities we structure in tandem.
  • For Objective #2 (below) we are focusing on derisking a larger fundraise, so the meta-risk is that we don’t derisk the things stated above in the “solution.”

Objectives

Objective #1: Create a platform that leverages the Juicebox protocol for Citizens and Teams to manage a campaign to fund an initiative.

Key Results for Objective #1:

  • Kick start at least one initiative to help raise a treasury around with an existing Citizen or Team.
  • Raise over 10 ETH for that initiative for another team or citizen before the end of the quarter.
  • Create a successful campaign for their initiative that reaches > 100k impressions on social media.
  • Generate at least 1 ETH in revenue for MoonDAO.
  • In exchange for support receive an IP or revenue generating asset that can be leveraged at MoonDAO long term.

Objective #2: Set the groundwork and de-risk a second MoonDAO mission that gets us a step closer to our roadmap to the Moon.

Key Results for Objective #2:

  • Hire a strategic marketing advisor who has taken a concept and successfully communicated it to a large audience of at least +1m impressions.
  • Negotiate a deal with an influential individual with at least +1m followers that would participate in this mission and help communicate what MoonDAO is doing.
  • Negotiate a deal with a launch provider for a future mission with cost estimates and mission timeline derisked.
  • Derisk the funding mechanisms for a future raise and put together an action plan, and continue R&D around the Prediction Market.
