Abstract

This proposal invites MoonDAO to help launch a brand‐new virtual reality experience called “Living in Space” during World Space Week. In simple terms, we want to build a fun VR journey (spatial without headsets and VR with headsets) that lets anyone—kids, teens, and adults—see what it might be like to live in space. This immersive adventure will not only spark curiosity and excitement about space but also boost MoonDAO’s global visibility by partnering with the largest event series on Earth and one of the oldest space advocacy organizations in the world. By bringing cutting‐edge spatial content to schools, museums, and online platforms, this initiative will inspire the multiple generations of space enthusiasts and industry pioneers.

WSW is the largest space event series on Earth—15K+ events across 88 countries, with 94M+ social media impressions! Held every October 4-10, it brings together space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, museums, and clubs for global space education and outreach.

The Living in Space VR experience has been quoted by a vendor but not yet designed. There have been some initial brainstorming sessions such as leveraging commercial space station content for different storylines (initial conversations with one of the providers now). Storylines discussed have been: launching from Earth to space, living and working quarters in space, sports in space (space games federation), grocery shopping in space (interstellar labs & reach goal of a grocery store - ideally Walmart if anyone has connections!!), microgravity labs and research, space infrastructure like satellites, lunar view and lunar resources overview etc.

Problem

Despite significant advances in space technology, the industry faces several outreach challenges and widespread misconceptions. Many people still don’t understand why we explore space or the range of opportunities it offers. Conversations in the space sector are often confined within a small circle of experts, leaving the general public—and especially younger generations—uninformed and unengaged. Furthermore, as the current workforce ages, there is an urgent need to break down the notion that only engineers can work in space. As mentioned at several conferences, space folks only talk to space folks. This siloed communication limits cross-industry collaboration and prevents a broader understanding of the many roles and innovations emerging in the space field. Without fresh, inclusive, and engaging outreach efforts, misconceptions will persist, and the pipeline of future talent and innovation may dwindle.

Additionally, many people struggle to grasp abstract space concepts because they are hard to visualize. Schools, museums, and online platforms need engaging and interactive ways to explain space exploration so that it becomes tangible and exciting for everyone.

Solution

We propose to develop “Living in Space,” a VR immersive experience that transports users into a simulated space environment. Key elements include:

  • Immersive Spatial Content: Create vivid VR scenarios that show life in space—from launching off Earth to daily activities like working, playing sports, or even grocery shopping in microgravity.
  • AR/AI-Enhanced Interactions: Integrate custom AR/AI-driven content to personalize and enrich the user experience.
  • Broad Accessibility: Make the experience available on VR headsets and computers, reaching schools, museums, and online audiences worldwide.

Successful example of unique cross industry collaboration: Axiom's Prada space suit

Space industry call out: We are also looking to bring in space companies like the commercial space stations (initial talks taking place now) and have our satellite providers help with any additional broadband requirements.

Distribution note: The spatial content will be available on any laptop/computer for global accessibility. We will work with the sponsors on the VR options for distribution as we are also looking to get headset sponsors. Additionally, we could create an app so anyone with headsets could access the content, but that is a nice to have as we will look for additional strategic sponsors.

We are requesting a total sponsorship of $15,000, which will be allocated as follows:

  • $12,600 – Spatial Content Creation: Develop immersive, spatially designed VR content that vividly illustrates what living in space could look like. This content will be accessible via VR headsets and computers, ensuring a broad reach during the global celebration.
  • $3,400 – World Space Week Operating/Admin Costs: Contribute to the operational and administrative expenses of WSW, the world’s largest space event series. Celebrated every October 4–10 in 88 countries with over 15,000 events and 94+ million social impressions, WSW offers an unparalleled platform for global exposure.

Benefits

  • For MoonDAO:
    • Increased Global Visibility: Enhanced global brand visibility through association with one of the world's oldest space advocacy organizations designated by the UN with presence at United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). Last year's celebration had 15k+ events in 88 countries with 94M+ social media impressions.
    • Networking and Partnerships: Reinforcement of MoonDAO’s reputation as an early adopter and innovator in tech and space initiatives. WSW provides a platform for MoonDAO to connect with industry professionals, space enthusiasts, and technologists, fostering relationships that could lead to collaborations or support for MoonDAO’s initiatives.
    • Community Engagement: Event participation allows MoonDAO to showcase its mission, vision, and projects, inspiring attendees to join the DAO, the Space Acceleration Network, or contribute to its efforts.
    • Media and Content Creation: Opportunities for digital event content and social media features and other marketing channels, boosting engagement and recruitment efforts. WSW has gotten global media coverage before with it's work in Africa. We are also working on a VR Africa experience.
  • For World Space Week:
    • Critical financial and technological support to roll out a groundbreaking immersive experience.
    • Expanded global reach and impact, engaging diverse audiences from space agencies to local communities.
  • For the Audience:
    • A fun, hands-on way to explore and understand space.
    • Inspiration to pursue further learning and innovation in space and technology.

Potential Revenue: While this initiative is primarily educational and engagement-focused, the increased visibility and media interest could lead to future sponsorships, partnerships, and content monetization opportunities.

Risks

  • Technical Challenges: Difficulties in developing high-quality VR and integrating AI could delay the project.
  • Global Coordination: Managing deployments across diverse venues worldwide may encounter logistical hurdles.
  • Accessibility Issues: Limited access to VR hardware in some regions could restrict audience reach.

Mitigation Strategies: Partner with experienced vendors (identified vendor, ERKS), perform phased rollouts with pilot testing, and plan for alternative access methods (e.g., computer-based experiences). Amy, the project manager has a strong background in global technology implementations at TripAdvisor, WeWork (during hyper-growth), Amazon & subsequently as an independent consultant for global companies.

Objectives

Objective #1: Launch the “Living in Space” VR immersive experience during World Space Week 2025.

Key Results for Objective #1:

  • Develop, pilot, and deploy a fully functional VR experience showcasing life in space for World Space Week 2025 for 10/4-10/10.
  • WSW events are tracked and we will work with the VR company to get metrics for the views of the spatial and VR views.
  • WSW events are held at various locations physically and digitally. We have schools and museums that we partner with and would aim to put this content in strategic museums. For instance, one of our board members has started conversations with a well known US museum on the East Coast.
  • Last year's event held 15k events in 88 countries with 94M+ social media impressions.
  • Aligns with MoonDAO’s goal of promoting innovative tech and expanding its global presence in space outreach.
  • Fully operational and live during World Space Week 2025.

Objective #2: Broaden Global Outreach

Key Results for Objective #2:

  • Engage diverse audiences—including youth and working-age groups—to engage global communities to participate in the space industry and showcase MoonDAO as an organization anyone in the world can join today.
  • MoonDAO hosts WSW online event to educate others on the organizations initiatives and how to join MoonDAO
  • Increase social media engagement during the campaign period compared to prior outreach events
  • Achievable: Utilize existing World Space Week infrastructure and digital platforms to amplify messaging.
  • Relevant: Tackles the siloed nature of current space discussions and rejuvenates interest among underrepresented groups in the space workforce.
  • Time-Bound: Achieve these outreach targets by the end of World Space Week 2025.

Objective #3: Leverage post-event opportunities

Key Results for Objective #3:

  • Share event media assets with the MoonDAO community after the event close.
