Abstract
Mission Cosmic Colombia uses the inspiration of space to democratize STEAM education for children and youth across Colombia, focusing on underserved communities and patients affected by cancer and degenerative diseases. Through a 7-day immersive program, Solidarity Space Kits, teacher training, and regional replication, the project delivers hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics experiences that build skills, emotional resilience, and a culture of curiosity. This proposal requests funding to produce and distribute educational kits, run workshops, train educators, document impact, and create a sustainable model for replication.
Problem
Many Colombian children and adolescents lack access to high quality STEAM education due to economic, geographic, and social barriers. Rural and low income urban communities often have limited educational materials, few trained STEAM teachers, and low exposure to role models in science. Additionally, children facing serious illnesses (e.g., cancer or degenerative conditions) frequently lose access to educational and motivational experiences that support emotional wellbeing and future aspirations. These gaps reduce long-term opportunities and limit Colombia’s ability to develop a diverse, local talent pipeline for the space and technology sectors.
Solution
Mission Cosmic Colombia is a combined educational and social program that blends experiential STEAM workshops, cultural arts, and psychosocial support. The core components are: The heart of Mission Cosmic Colombia is the 7 day immersive STEAM Space Journey, an experiential program designed to connect space exploration with creativity, hands-on learning, and emotional support. Each day builds a bridge between science, imagination, and hope, transforming education into a cosmic adventure that inspires and empowers.
Program Overview:
- Day 1 – Science in Space: Experiments in physics and astronomy.
- Day 2 – Space Technology: Robotics and the “Cosmic Coffee” innovation project, space robotics.
- Day 3 – Space Engineering: “Cosmic Boost” rocket design workshop, rocketry.
- Day 4 – Cosmic Arts: Poetry, music, and film inspired by the universe.
- Day 5 – Mathematics for Space: Games and challenges in applied math.
- Day 6 – Teachers’ Day: Training educators to replicate the model in their own schools and communities.
- Day 7 – Galaxy Day (Bogotá): A large-scale community celebration that blends science, art, and solidarity, showcasing student projects, artistic performances, and the delivery of Solidarity Space Kits.
This sequence ensures that every participant experiences the intersection of knowledge, creativity, and compassion. By the end of the week, children, families, and teachers will not only have learned about the universe, they will have felt part of it.
- A 7-day 'STEAM Space Journey' delivered in Bogotá with regional satellite events. Each day focuses on a discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, Teacher Training, and a Community Galaxy Day).
- Production and distribution of 500 'Solidarity Space Kits' for children in hospitals and vulnerable communities. Kits include a paintable pillow, a dreams & creativity booklet, a legacy book section, and hope postcards.
- Teacher training modules and open-source curricula so local educators can replicate workshops independently.
- 'Cosmic Guests' program featuring young local STEAM ambassadors who mentor participants and model successful, relatable pathways into STEM careers.
- Monitoring, evaluation, and multimedia documentation (video/photo stories, short reports) to measure impact and support future fundraising/replication.
Alternative solutions considered included a fully virtual program and a smaller-scale kit distribution. We selected a hybrid, in-person-first model because hands-on experiences produce stronger learning outcomes and emotional connections for participants; virtual materials will be created to complement and scale the program.
Benefits
Core benefits for beneficiaries and MoonDAO:
- Directly engages thousands of children and teachers with inspirational STEAM programming.
- Provides emotional support for children in medical care through tangible Solidarity Space Kits.
- Builds local capacity by training teachers and creating open-source curricula for long-term impact.
- Positions MoonDAO as a visible, high-impact supporter of inclusive space education in Latin America, increasing community goodwill and potential on-chain storytelling and NFT/collectible campaigns tied to impact milestones.
- Potential revenue/visibility opportunities: branded collectible NFTs, sponsorships for regional events, or paid advanced teacher training workshops; however, the primary goal is social impact rather than revenue generation.
Risks
Primary risks and mitigation strategies:
- Logistics or vendor delays (kits or venue availability) – mitigation: multiple local suppliers, early procurement windows, and contingency budgets (5-10%).
- Low uptake in target regions – mitigation: partnerships with local foundations and schools (Fundación Jerónimo Soy Muy Feliz, Fundación Nuevo Amanecer, Colegio Cultura Popular), targeted outreach, and offering teacher incentives for participation.
- Health or safety constraints for hospital visits – mitigation: coordinate with hospital social workers, follow health protocols, and prepare sanitized kit variants when necessary.
- Budget shortfall – mitigation: phased implementation, prioritizing kit production and teacher training, and activating additional fundraising through local sponsors and MoonDAO community bounties.
Objectives
Objective #1: Deliver an inclusive 7-day STEAM Space Journey in Bogotá and distribute 500 Solidarity Space Kits to children in need by 2026. Key Results:
- Host the 7-day flagship program with at least 300 direct participants (students + teachers + families).
- Produce and distribute 500 Solidarity Space Kits to hospitals and community centers across 15+ departments.
- Train 50 teachers through in-person Teacher Day and follow-up online modules, enabling replication in their schools.
- Achieve media reach of at least 10,000 impressions (local & regional media, social networks).
Members responsible: Giovanna Ramírez (Project Lead) and Project Core Team
Team (Table A)
Project Lead: The Project Lead and representative for the project within the MoonDAO Senate. The Project Lead is responsible for:
- Attending weekly town hall meetings, reviewing incoming proposals and voting on them within the Senate. Missed attendance will result in a 5% penalty to the rocketeer’s retroactive rewards.
- Creating weekly updates to the community on the progress of the project in the “progress” channel on DIscord.
- Adding team members, removing team members, and making decisions about the use of the budget throughout the lifetime of the project.
- Creating and managing the multi-sig Treasury for the project as well as the payments for each of the members.
- Creating the Final Report and returning unused funds to the MoonDAO Treasury.
Initial Team: Projects may not need an initial team. It can just be an individual submitting a proposal. You may also create generic roles and hire other teammates after the project is approved. As a general rule of thumb, try to keep teams small and focused in the beginning, with clear roles, deliverables, and OKRs for each member. Team members are responsible for:
- Posting a weekly update in the “progress” channel on Discord with their contributions that week. Not posting a weekly update will result in a 5% penalty to their retroactive rewards.
