TT-8: Discretion to Reimburse MultiSig Addresses for Incurred Transaction & Gas Fees

Cycle

Synopsis

Authorize the multisig to reimburse Ethereum gas fees’s spent by the multisig to execute transactions.

Motivation

There is no formal policy currently for gas reimbursements by the multisig.

Executing transactions is expensive and volatile, but writing individual reimbursement proposals takes time and attention. By putting a reasonable reimbursement process in place, the DAO can give multisig holders more confidence when completing transactions on behalf of the DAO.

As the DAO now has funding cycles and a governance process, it should offer payout distribution reimbursements to ensure that transactions get completed in a timely way and to make sure folks get paid back.

These reimbursements should help to make DAO operations smoother.

Specification

Within each 30-day period, allow the multisig to reimburse up to 1 ETH for confirming transactions and incurred gas fees.

These amounts are to be distributed at the multisig's discretion, and are not guaranteed to individuals not on the multisig. Multisig signers should exercise their best judgement when queuing, signing, or executing reimbursement transactions.

For any larger reimbursements, a proposal will still be required.

Rationale

Reimbursements will most likely be far below these amounts, but setting these thresholds gives the multisig some leeway to deal with unexpected events.

Risks

  • This proposal follows the trend of giving more power and responsibility to the multisig, which can go wrong.
  • Multisig signers might be less careful if they think that refunds are guaranteed.

Timeline

Approve these reimbursements for 180 days from the time this proposal is ratified on Snapshot.
